Open Tryouts for New CIVF Junior Elite Programme

26 April, 2021

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands - The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation (CIVF) is set to launch its new Junior Elite Programme this Saturday, 1 May, at the First Baptist indoor volleyball court. This will be the first of several tryouts for girls and boys, ages 8-17. Players who are selected will receive focused training for both indoor and beach volleyball.

“This is a significant and historic moment in the development of our sport,” declared CIVF Technical Director, Trevor Theroulde. “We are aiming to establish a permanent grassroots programme that will train young players and identify potential. Exposing children and teens to the sport early and teaching them fundamentals is key to the success of any sport and volleyball is no different. The Junior Elite Programme will be a pipeline for players to graduate into Cayman’s indoor and beach volleyball national teams.”

Theroulde explained that anyone between the ages of 8 and 17, regardless of skill level or experience, is encouraged to participate. “No one should feel intimidated or discouraged because they feel they’re not already a good player, CIVF is  ommitted to making these sessions fun and informative.” he said. “We are eager to teach and there is no requirement for any prior volleyball experience. We will be observing the players and evaluating them based on their coachability, attitude, work ethic and athleticism. Newcomers to the sport, also might have advantages of height, quickness, or eye-hand coordination that could help them excel in volleyball. The bottom line is that everyone should come out and give it a try because it’s the only way to find out if you’re the kind of diamond in the rough we are looking for.”

Marcus Patterson, CIVF board member responsible for youth, says this is the perfect opportunity for young people to join a fast-rising sport. “Volleyball is gaining popularity both internationally and in the Cayman Islands,” he said. “There are many exciting opportunities for young players, including world travel and university scholarships.”
